PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

About

PRF is created by drawing a small amount of blood and spinning it at a low speed to concentrate platelets within a fibrin matrix. Injected or applied with microneedling, PRF gradually improves tone, texture, and vitality in areas like the under-eyes, face, neck, and scalp—without synthetic additives.

Pre-Care
Medical Changes & Treatment Readiness

Notify Platinum Medical Spa of any changes in your medical history, health status, medications, or personal activities that may affect your treatment. If you develop a fever, cold, flu symptoms, a cold sore, blemish, rash, or irritation in the treatment area before your appointment, your treatment must be rescheduled. If you are planning for a special event or vacation, schedule your PRF treatment at least 2 weeks in advance, and preferably 3 to 4 weeks in advance.

Medications, Blood Thinners & Supplements

For at least 3 to 7 days, and ideally 1 week before treatment, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements to reduce bruising and support optimal results. This includes Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, NSAIDs, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids, DHA, Omega-3 capsules, and St. John’s Wort. If you are taking Coumadin, Plavix, or any other prescription blood thinner, notify your provider immediately. If you have a cardiovascular history, consult your physician before stopping any blood thinner.

Steroids, Dental Work & Immunizations

Avoid systemic corticosteroids within 2 weeks of treatment. If you are taking steroid medication, consult your prescribing physician before discontinuing it. Avoid dental work, oral surgery, and immunizations for 1 month before treatment, and wait at least 2 weeks after treatment before scheduling these procedures.

Alcohol, Caffeine & Lifestyle Preparation

Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before treatment. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol, caffeine, niacin supplements, spicy foods, and cigarettes for 3 days before treatment, as these may increase bruising. Stay well hydrated for 24 hours before your appointment.

Skin Preparation & Day of Treatment

Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, creams, gels, and lotions on the treatment area. A topical anesthetic may be applied for comfort. A small blood sample will be drawn and centrifuged, then processed through a heating and cooling phase to form a fibrin matrix. The PRF gel is then prepared for injection into treatment areas such as tear troughs, smile lines, lips, face, or scalp.

Cold Sores & Procedure Expectations

If you are being treated around the lips and have a history of herpes or frequent cold sore outbreaks, you may require antiviral medication before treatment. Let Platinum Medical Spa know if you need a prescription. During and after treatment, you may experience redness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, firmness, tingling, numbness, lumpiness, or a feeling of pressure or fullness in the treated area. Firmness may last 1 to 2 weeks and then soften gradually.

Quality Over Volume

Enhances tone, texture, and elasticity rather than changing shape.

Delicate-Area Friendly

Especially useful around the eyes where fillers may be less suitable.

Face & Scalp Versatility

Can be combined with microneedling or hair protocols for broader impact.

Draw, Spin, Renew

Quick blood draw → centrifugation → injections or microneedling application. Sessions take 30–60 minutes. A series of 3 spaced 4–6 weeks apart is common, with maintenance as advised.

Post Care
Immediate Aftercare & Touch Restrictions

After treatment, avoid touching, pressing, rubbing, scrubbing, or manipulating the treated area for at least 8 to 24 hours. Avoid placing excessive pressure on the treated area for the first few days. When cleansing your face or applying products, be extremely gentle. Sleep on your back with your head elevated and use a clean pillowcase. Avoid rubbing the treated area for 2 weeks.

Washing, Makeup & Product Restrictions

Do not wash the treated area or shower for at least 6 hours after PRF injections. Do not use lotions, creams, or makeup for at least 6 hours after treatment. Some protocols allow makeup immediately after treatment, but for best healing and lowest irritation risk, avoid makeup for the first 24 hours whenever possible. For topical PRF facial application, do not wash the skin for at least 5 hours after treatment.

Pain Control, Ice & Bruising Prevention

If you experience discomfort or tenderness, you may take Acetaminophen or Tylenol as directed. Avoid Aspirin, NSAIDs, and blood-thinning agents after treatment to reduce bruising. Cold gel packs or ice may be gently applied after treatment to help reduce swelling and bruising, but avoid excessive pressure.

Heat, Exercise & Activity Restrictions

Avoid direct high heat, blow dryers, sun exposure, saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, very hot showers, hot yoga, vigorous exercise, and strenuous activity for at least the remainder of the treatment day and up to 3 days after treatment depending on sensitivity. For topical PRF, avoid any activity that causes sweating or gets the skin wet for at least 5 hours after application. You may otherwise return to most normal daily activities almost immediately.

Expected Healing & Cosmetic Treatment Restrictions

It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, soreness, swelling, tenderness, or mild firmness for several days after treatment. These effects may last from 3 to 14 days depending on the area treated. Avoid facials, facial massage, laser treatments, chemical peels, and light-based procedures for 2 weeks after treatment. Botox may be injected immediately before or after PRF if planned appropriately. Avoid extended UV exposure until redness and swelling have resolved, and wear SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

Results, Follow-Up & Maintenance

Most patients begin to see improvement within 2 to 4 weeks, with continued improvement for up to 12 weeks. If the desired correction has not been reached, treatment may be repeated at 4 to 12 week intervals until the desired result is achieved. For topical PRF facial treatments, a series of 3 to 6 treatments at 2 to 4 week intervals is recommended for best results. Maintenance treatments are generally recommended every 6 to 12 months, although results may last up to 2 years and longevity varies from patient to patient. Contact Platinum Medical Spa immediately if you have severe pain, increasing redness, excessive swelling, signs of infection, or any concern about your healing.
